Mojstrana
At
641 m. Mojstrana lies at the confluence of the Triglavska Bistrica and
the Sava Rivers, on the edge of the Triglav National Park. There is
evidence of 14th Century mining and iron working here. Present-day
Mojstrana is the home of a few generations of distinguished
mountaineers and skiers. Top climbers continued the tradition of
Triglav guides from the Classical period, and took part, amongst
others, in Himalayan expeditions reaching a few 8000 metre peaks via
difficult new climbing routes. Free-climbing, too, has achieved
European standards. Skiers, both men and women, boast a fine set of
national champions in all branches of skiing, with two Medallists in
slalom at Olympic Games. A short distance to the east of the village
is St. Clement’s Church. In the local alpine museum you can see
various geological, ethnographic, historical and mountaineering items.
Mojstrana is also the starting point for Triglav (2864 m), the highest
summit of the Julian Alps.
Dovje
At
703 m, Dovje is a thousand-year-old-village which is beautifully set
among terraced fields and orchards along the southern foot of the steep
sunny slopes of the Karavanke. The village has preserved many typical
features of alpine architecture, the most outstanding being the arched
doorways of farmhouses. In the churchyard of St. Michael’s Parish
Church lie buried many Triglav victims. Some Triglav fans, however, who
were fortunate enough to die a natural death, expressed a last wish to
be buried there too. One of those was Miss Fanny Copeland (1872-1970),
a life-long admirer of Triglav, who, British by birth, spent much of
her life, a full 60 years here in Slovenia. The priest, Jakob
Aljaz, a dedicated mountaineer, composer and mountain- hut builder is
also buried here.
